The Law About Car Tyres

Around 12% of UK cars have at least one defective tyre.

What you need to know

Tyres must be correctly inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's and the tyre manufacturer's recommended pressure.

If you drive with damaged or worn tyres you risk being fined and you risk invalidating your car insurance policy.

  • No lump, bulge or tear to the tyre structure
  • No cut or tear in the tyre tread or tyre wall
  • Tread depth must not fall below the legal minimum 1.6 millimetres, across the central ¾ of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre

A vehicle with any of these faults is liable to fail an MOT test.

Tyres must be correctly inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's and the tyre manufacturer's recommended pressure. ('Run-flat' tyres partially inflated or in flat condition are permitted in certain circumstances.)
